Christian Blends Hardwoods & Steel - Recent Projects
Posted: Oct 06 2012
Recently I have started designing various pieces by blending hardwoods with steel. The goal has been to use the innate minimalist perfection of the metal to hi-lite the contrasting organic beauty of the wood. The steel is usually expressed in a way so as to achieve a harmonious rhythm among many repeated elements. Using architectural lines and engineering to showcase a natural material is the desired aesthetic. I have worked primarily with Walnut, sometimes highly polished with my own proprietary thin "glass" finish, while other times leaving the wood less polished and finished with a specific varnish, to produce a more natural hand-rubbed finish.
My most recent projects include a solid mahogany daybed with a top grain leather mattress cover, an over-sized chandelier consisting of a system of horizontal walnut slatted frames connected by 28 vertical stainless steel rods, and a 5' tall sculpture consisting of 2 stainless steel ellipses, one twisted and floating inside the other, connected around their arcs by 40 pieces of thin gauge rod. Expressions that are both unexpected and luxurious are what I continue to strive for.
